Origin Story

All heroes have awesome origin stories.

Bruce Wayne was scared shitless by bats and became one to avenge his parents. Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider. The Hulk is exposed to gamma rays in a scientific experiment gone horribly wrong. And so it goes.

The birth of these heroes is so incredible that everything that comes after is fairly boring. Ho hum, yeah, he’s so great, he’s so amazing, so-and-so is defeating evil yet again. Yawn. Hey, we like beginnings. It’s the formation of the heroes that’s interesting.

I’m becoming financially independent (FI). I’m close. I’m on the cusp of it. It’s so near that it feels as though I’m living two lives. In one, I’m a mild-mannered software engineer with a wife and home. In the other, I’m a superhero, breaking through the drudgery of day-to-day working life and becoming something different, something other.

Soon, I’ll be living a fi but for the time being, I’m just another working drone. I am going to chronicle the transition, all of the ups and downs, the highs and lows, as honestly as possible.

Because my goal isn’t to give folks super-incredible tips on how to become financially independent. Lots of other website already do that — much, much better than I possibly could. No, I want to try to communicate what you might be in for if you travel this road, if my own experience is any indication whatsoever.
