The Joys of Downshifting
Let’s recap the main benefits of working for StartupVille over FinancialCompany.
- Fewer hours worked per week
- More pleasant working conditions and teammates
- Stable schedules, very little off-hour and weekend work
- A good manager, i.e. No More Cthulhu
It’s unbelievably nice to have time and energy again. This was all possible by downshifting from a job only a workaholic could love to a different position, one with constraints on time and responsibility in place.
For the record, I don’t think that my job with StartupVille is all that much easier than my first position at SoftwareCompany. But it sure feels easier because of my recent experiences and gains in efficiency. It’s sort of like conditioning yourself to run a marathon, but then on race day, instead of running 26.2 miles, only dropping in seven or eight.
Sure, it’s still a decent run, but it’s not what you were expecting — you have a lot of energy remaining in the tank after you’re done with your reduced workout.
I immediately loved having something left at the end of the day, and realized that the less work I do, the happier I am in general. I think this is true for most people, as long as their basic needs (food, shelter, clothing, and friendships) are met.
Bottom line: I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend downshifting to others who have already built up a decent stash and feel like they need to slow down or risk losing their sanity.
